Square braid wicks and flat braid wicks are both types of candle wicks used for different candle-making applications, and they have distinct characteristics and uses.
Square Braid Wick
- Structure: Square braid wicks were originally designed for beeswax candles due to the high viscosity of beeswax, which requires a specific type of surface for the wax to climb in the wick system.
- Shape: Despite the name, the section of a square braid wick is not actually square but rather round, and its thickness allows it to stand up straight in a candle's melt pool.
- Material: Made of 100% natural cotton fibers to improve burn qualities.
- Curling: Engineered to curl while burning, which minimizes carbon build-up (mushrooming).
- Applications: Useful in all types of candle systems, especially for waxes that are highly viscous when molten, like beeswax and vegetable wax - perfect for larger, symetrical shapes and columns.
- Sizes: Our available sizes are 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm in diameter.
Flat Braid Wick
- Structure: Flat braid wicks are made of three braided bundles of threads, each bundle being made of a certain number of threads.
- Shape: Braided in a manner that all three bundles lie flat, and the wick is referred to by the thickness of a single bundle i.e 3x6 = 3 bundles of 0.6mm.
- Material: Composed of natural fibers.
- Curling: Known for curling at the tip throughout the combustion cycle, which reduces carbon buildup and makes it almost self-trimming.
- Applications: Often found in dipped, poured, or extruded candle systems like container, votive, and pillar candles. Our flat braid wicks are also used in many of our intricate figurines.
- Sizes: Available in sizes ranging from 3x6 (thinnest) to 3x18 (thickest), used in pillar candles with varying diameters.
